My Son Loves CBD for Restless Leg Syndrome

Restless Leg Syndrome

Tons of people suffer with restless leg syndrome and my son will be the first to tell you CBD can provide relief from the symptoms.

CBD can relieve the symptoms of restless leg syndrome in teenagers in about 30 minutes and the benefits last long enough to fall asleep and get a full nights sleep.

My wife and I actually had no idea our 12 year old son was struggling with restless leg syndrome (RLS) until about a year ago. We had sent the kids to bed about an hour ago and as we were getting ready ourselves, our son came in and said he couldn’t sleep.

When we asked him why he couldn’t sleep, he said he couldn’t stop moving his legs. He said it felt like they just had to move non-stop. He said they had been doing this for quite a while and it had kept him up quite a bit. This son of ours is an angel. He probably never told us because he didn’t want to make a big deal about it. But for whatever reason, he finally came to us this one night.

Since I’ve been learning so much about CBD, I suggested he should give CBD a try. I have written about the calming benefits of CBD and thought perhaps it could provide some benefit to this problem he was having. And if it didn’t help, it certainly wouldn’t make it worse. There really wasn’t a reason to not try it. It was late at night at this point and we had no other options at the moment.

So he took the CBD and went back to his room. He never came back in the room so we fell asleep ourselves. The next morning he came upstairs and said he slept great. Apparently it took about 30 minutes before the CBD kicked in and took away this impulse to keep moving his legs. It was a great win for CBD and for our son!

What type of CBD product do we give our son

We give our son one CBD taffy at night when he feels his legs becoming agitated. We got these CBD taffies from CBD Essence. The sell them in several flavors. Our sons favorite flavor is chocolate but he’s tried all of their flavors and he doesn’t mind any of them.

We haven’t tried any other CBD delivery formats with him. I’m sure CBD gummy bears would work just fine. The trick with kids is making sure that the delivery system doesn’t take too much work or taste too bad. If you have other ideas for delivering CBD to kids please leave a comment below. I’d love to hear what you use for your kids.

In my personal opinion, CBD oil would be too difficult for children. It takes some focus and concentration to keep it under your tongue for a few minutes before swallowing. Not a big deal for an older teenager or adult, but for a young child it seems like it could be a little to difficult. And with other more convenient options out there, I just don’t see the point of making it more difficult than necessary.

How much CBD does he get

Each of these taffies has 10 mg of CBD. So it’s not a huge dose, but it does the trick for our son. It’s possible as he grows that we may need to give him a larger dose to get the same effect. But right now he weighs about 100 pounds and 10 mg of CBD seems to work really well.

I wouldn’t be too worried about giving him a larger dose, but I don’t see the point in wasting money on higher levels of CBD if 10 mg works. This stuff isn’t cheap so finding the minimum effective dose is important from a financial standpoint.

How long does it take to get relief

As I mentioned above, our son claims it takes him about 30 minutes for the CBD to kick in and quiet his legs. Now that he knows he can take a CBD taffy and get relief, he starts paying attention to his legs before we start getting ready for bed. He can usually tell when his legs are going to give him trouble at night.

He’s getting to where he takes a taffy shortly before our nightly routine. That way, by the time he actually gets in bed, his legs aren’t causing him any troubles.

How long does the relief last

Its hard to say exactly how long the relief actually lasts. What I can say is that it lasts plenty long for him to fall asleep without dealing with any symptoms of RLS. Once he’s asleep he doesn’t wake up during the night with any problems. So essentially, if the relief lasts all night for him. In fact he says he sleeps really restfully on the nights he takes CBD. He says its that kind of sleep where you don’t feel like you moved all night.

Are there any side effects

The short answer is “No”. We haven’t seen any signs of side effects for our son. He doesn’t seem to sleep in longer after taking CBD. He isn’t groggy in the morning. He is getting really good grades and doing well in school. He enjoys reading and has no issues focusing on a book the day after taking CBD. Essentially all the things you would worry about with your kids as a parent, seem to be non-issues in our case.

I should probably note that this child does not take any other medications of any kind. If he did we would definitely consult his physician before trying CBD. But he’s a very healthy kid. He runs cross country in the fall, skis in the winter, and in the summer he enjoys baseball and hiking.

This is part of why we felt comfortable experimenting with the CBD. Plus everything I’ve learned about it suggests that it’s very safe. But every kid is different and you should do your own homework if you’re considering CBD for your child.

Does he take CBD every night?

No he doesn’t take CBD every night. The reason is that he doesn’t have RLS every night. We don’t know what triggers the RLS. We haven’t been able to correlate it with any dietary issues or daily activities.

He’s had RLS on days when he’s been very active as well as days where he hasn’t done much of anything. His stress level during the day at school doesn’t seem to play a role either.

But he can tell when he’s going to have a leg problem at night. He starts to feel it in the late evening. When he’s feeling it come on, he takes a CBD taffy and it takes it away shortly after.

Is RLS getting worse

We haven’t seen any changes in the frequency of his RLS since taking CBD. It doesn’t appear that the number of nights he experiences RLS is increasing or decreasing. It’s just kind of a random event. Once in a while he’ll have it two or three nights in a row and then he’ll go over a week with no issue.

We don’t believe the CBD is a cure to the RLS or makes it more likely to show up at night. We kind of consider it similar to taking ibuprofen for a headache. The ibuprofen doesn’t make the headaches come more frequently and it doesn’t prevent you from getting them in the future. But it does help with the discomfort of a headache. And that’s exactly how we feel about CBD for our son.

Is he becoming dependent on CBD

We have seen no evidence that he is becoming dependent on CBD. He isn’t asking for them more frequently or sneaking them during the day. We watch them pretty close because they aren’t cheap.

He honestly doesn’t feel any different when he takes the CBD. It just helps relieve the RLS he occasionally experiences at night. There’s no “high” that he experiences when taking it so there really no risk of developing a physical dependence on CBD.

Summary

Our son finds relief from RLS by taking CBD before bed. He doesn’t need it every night because he doesn’t struggle with RLS every night. We don’t see any negative side effects to him taking CBD on an occasional basis. When he does feel RLS setting in before bed, it takes about 30 minutes after taking CBD for the RLS to go away. We give him CBD taffies because they taste good and are easy for him to consume.
